Who is the programme for?
An NVQ Level 1 hairdressing qualification allows successful candidates to assist within a hairdressing salon. The course is for candidates who do not have qualifications to go onto NVQ Level 1 hairdressing course.
How long does it take to complete?
1 year – 1 day per week, Winsford Campus
What qualifications do I need?
A good understanding of written and verbal English is essential. Applicants must have a strong interest in working in the hair industry. Good communication skills and personal presentation are also essential. A high level of commitment and motivation is necessary, along with high levels of attendance.
What is the programme structure?
Students will study the following six units:
• Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety,
• Contribute to the development of effective working relationships,
• Shampoo and condition hair,
• Assist with hair colour services,
• Prepare for hairdressing services and maintain work areas
• Blow dry hair
What does it include?
The course will include learning a variety of hairdressing skills in the Colleges brand new Hair Salon at the Winsford Campus.
Functional Skills
This course does not include functional skills.
Are there any special facilities for the programme?
There are commercial facilities which are fully equipped and up to date. This will provide a realistic working environment for you to train in. You will become a valued member of the team and play a vital role within a busy commercial salon environment.
How is the programme assessed?
This programme is assessed through a combination of written examinations, assignments, projects and coursework: forming a portfolio of evidence that is continually assessed both internally (within the college) and externally (by the awarding body).
Will there be any extra costs involved?
You will need to purchase the required uniform and hairdressing kit at an approximate cost of £150.Students on a low income may be able to get financial help from the learner support fund at college, (LSF) or receive an Adult Learning Grant (ALG).

The College provides a range of learning support for students who like extra help with their studies. If you need help in deciding what to study or information on travel, finance, childcare, personal or health concerns, contact the Students Services desk.

What can I do next?
On successful completion of the programme students may progress onto NVQ Level 2 hairdressing or NVQ level 2 beauty.
