Who is the programme for?

This course is designed for people who are, or would like to be, involved in the public service sector. The course will develop the students understanding of practical and theoretical disciplines required within public service industries. There will also be significant focus on the skills required for effective communication, self-development and career progression.

How long does it take to complete?

This programme runs for 2 years full time - 3-4 years part-time.

What qualifications do I need?

Students need to have 3 GCSEs grade C or above including Maths and English, plus a minimum of 120 UCAS points from any of the following programmes:

• BTEC Extended Diploma/Certificate/Award
• A/S - A Levels
• AVCE

Alternatively an NVQ Level 3 or equivalent or a Pass in an appropriate kite-marked Access to Higher Education course.

Where possible an academic or vocational reference will be required to ensure suitability for this level of programme.
Students who do not meet the above admissions requirements will be considered for entry if they can demonstrate that they have relevant vocational experience, motivation and personal qualities appropriate for Foundation Degree level work.

What is the programme structure?

The Foundation Degree Course is made up of 12 units. 6 are studied in year 1 of the programme and 6 in year 2 (varying combinations of units are offered to those studying part time).

What does it include?

The Foundation Degree will include modules focusing on:
• The Criminal Mind
• Disaster Response
• Physical Preparation for the Public Services
• Justice and the Penal System
• Outdoor and Expedition Skills
• Public Service Work Placement.

Functional Skills

Functional Skills are not required for this course.

Are there any special facilities for the programme?

The programme will be taught at the new Winsford campus. Facilities include a student library, computer suites, specialist public services classrooms, a fitness gym and bouldering (free climbing) wall. Students studying on the course will also have access to local public service employers and outdoor education facilities.

How is the programme assessed?

The programme is assessed through coursework and examinations. Methods of assessment will include essays, research projects, group work, practical demonstration and portfolio building.

Will there be any extra costs involved?

Students may need to purchase text books and there will be some costs in order to cover course specific resources and activities.

What can I do next?

Students will have the opportunity to apply to progress on to the second or final year of an Honours Degree in a related area at any university. Students will have the opportunity to progress on to the third and final year of the following Honours Degree programme: BA (Hons) Public & Community Services at Manchester Metropolitan University (http://www.mmu.ac.uk). Students can also progress into employment in the Public and Community Services and pursue careers in areas such as Government, Council & Justice system, Armed & Public Services, Youth, Care & Probationary Work, and work in the voluntary/charity sector.
