Who is the programme for?
For those students interested in a career in Public Services e.g. Army, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, Police, Fire Service or Ambulance Service, either at the end of the one-year course or after a further period of study.
How long does it take to complete?
1 year
What qualifications do I need?
4 GCSEs at grade D or above or equivalent.
What is the programme structure?
• Develop an understanding of aspects of the uniformed service of your choice
• Look at other uniformed services as further options
• Develop skills necessary for entry to the uniformed service
• Develop physical fitness levels required for entry to the uniformed services
The course is made up of three core units and four specialist units, which include both practical and theory sessions.
What does it include?
You will study public service skills, physical fitness; teamwork; map reading and navigation and employment opportunities within the uniformed services. Team events and adventure activities are part of the course along with numeracy, IT and literacy skill development. A residential component is also included. There are extra curricular activities a variety of service exercise drills.
Functional Skills
If you are aged 16-18 and following this course as a full time student your programme will include tutorials, enrichment activities and the development of functional skills.
Functional skills are recognised and valued by employers and universities and are an important part of your course as they will help to improve your performance and confidence at college and in the future.
Are there any special facilities for the programme?
The facilities include a gym and a climbing wall.
How is the programme assessed?
Assessment is through a combination of practical assessments, assignments, projects and coursework forming a portfolio of evidence that is continually assessed both internally (within the College) and externally (by the awarding body).
Will there be any extra costs involved?
Students are required to purchase a uniform at a cost of approximately £100. A fee of up to £75 is required for practical activities and trips.

The College provides a range of learning support for students who like extra help with their studies. If you need help in deciding what to study or information on travel, finance, childcare, personal or health concerns, contact the Students Services desk.

Level 2 BTEC Diploma in Public Services
Examining/Validating Body
EDEXCEL.
What can I do next?
You will be able to progress on to the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Public Services (Uniformed) or directly into employment within the uniformed services.

Adults aged 19+ will need to pay a course fee of £250 you may qualify for remission of fees, in which case you will pay a reduced registration fee of £25. (Fees for 2011/2012)
