College Chaplains

College chaplains are leaders from local faith groups who volunteer their services to help students with:

• a listening ear
• issues relating to faith
• information on the faith they represent.

Chaplains

Mike Smith

Mike is the local Church of England vicar at St John’s church in Hartford.   He is married to Sarah, a GP, and they have two young daughters, Mary and Anna.  Mike became a Christian as a student and is happy to talk to anyone about anything! He enjoys wiring things up, would love to get to the gym more often than he does but mainly enjoys time with his daughters!

Charles Makonde

Charles, a Methodist Minister who lives in Kingsmead, is married to Joyce, and comes from the Methodist Church in Kenya.  He was born and grew up in a village 18 miles north of Mombasa in the coastal area of Kenya. He has pastoral charge of churches in Hartford, Davenham, Lostock Green and Plumley.

George Agar

George is married to Hilary and they have a son, Ben, and a daughter, Kate.  George retired after a successful career in teaching including many years as a comprehensive school head.  He joined the ministry team at St John's Church, Hartford in 1999.  Interests include travelling, walking, gardening and the theatre.

James Hughes

James is the minister of Christ Church Greenbank (the one which meets in the old Greenbank Station building – you may have stood quite close to it at times!), and grew up in Hartford.  He is married to Kirsty and they have three young children.  In his spare time he enjoys playing a little football – increasingly slowly – and enjoys reading.

 Helen Eccles

Helen is the Youth Worker at St John’s Church Hartford. She was a primary school teacher for eight years in a local school and has been involved with youth groups at church for the last 11 years. She would be delighted to hear from you if you ever wanted to chat. Her favourite things to do are dancing, reading, dog walking and watching Neighbours and Strictly Come Dancing.

Representatives of any faith prepared to offer their services in this way should contact David James, Student Services Manager on 01606 720502, email djames@midchesh.ac.uk.
